Ridgeland Historic District Foursquare

Moving from the city, this couple desired a more livable space in their new Oak Park home, and embarked on a kitchen and mudroom addition, along with adding a primary bathroom on the second floor.
We partnered with the homeowners to create a design that complements their Transitional aesthetic, using contemporary colors and honoring the American Foursquare style.
We ensured that the newly expanded kitchen would have considerably more prep space (tons!) than the original 1914 kitchen (almost none).
The “J-shaped” cabinet layout offers lots of elbow room, while a tactile backsplash is its own art piece.
A hand-hammered, stainless-steel farmer’s sink is both classic and contemporary, bathed in light from west and north-facing windows.
The clients created an expansive open kitchen and dining area by removing a load-bearing wall (and, it turned out, a heating pipe-bearing wall, too).
Above the kitchen, a new primary bathroom offers a spa-like atmosphere.
The rain shower includes a shaving shelf and a generous storage niche.
There’s a nice symmetry to the vanity, and reclaimed floating shelves provide additional storage.
A deep soaking tub is the perfect place to unwind in this primary suite.
