Historic Gunderson Reinvention
-
What do you get when you mix “historic Oak Park Gunderson” with “refined French bistro?”
-
Working in tandem with Chris Wollmuth Architecture, we redesigned the entire floor plan on the first floor.
-
This meant moving the kitchen, powder room, and dining room to new locations, and adding a second story to create a primary bedroom and bathroom suite.
-
We recognized the importance of preserving the original Gunderson details, so many original features remained, including the original pocket doors and original built-ins.
-
Features on the first floor include a coffee and drinks bar built into the family room, a tiled hood, an induction cooktop, and a speedcook oven in the kitchen.
-
We chose a warm base color palette of deep greens, ivory, and charcoal to accentuate the original stained wood trim throughout the first floor.
-
Brass pulls on the new coffee and drinks bring an element of period detail and pop against the charcoal cabinetry.
-
An updated powder room retains the original door and hardware, but offers contemporary calm.
-
The new first-floor plan provided space for a tidy mudroom area.
-
A new primary bathroom blends warmth, white, and classic touches to create a spa-like atmosphere.
-
Marble, ceramic tile, and multiple metal finishes offer additional texture and visual interest.
